Gestational diabetes is one type of diabetes where a form of glucose intolerance found in some pregnant women. The cause is still unknown. During pregnancy, doctor will give some forms of treatment to normalize blood glucose levels in the mother who has this gestational diabetes. These treatment is to avoid complication with the infant.

Of course, after giving birth, it is a relief to not have to take the insulin injections again. The mother also need not to be very watchful for any thing put into her mouth. However, the statistic shows that there are certain percentage of women that have gestational diabetes are found having type 2 diabetes after 5 – 10 years giving birth. Hence, for all the women that after giving birth, you still need to be very careful in choosing your diet, especially for those who has had gestational diabetes before. If you are nursing your baby, the choice of your food will also affecting your baby’s health. So, you should always selecting your diet wisely for the sake of your lovely baby.

The immediate risk for the mothers who has had gestational diabetes has increased probability of contracting Type 2 diabetes in coming days. So, it is highly recommended to those mothers to conduct a blood screening test after 6 months of giving birth. This is to ensure that the blood glucose levels are under control condition. After this screening, it is suggested to continue monitor the glucose level annually to prevent a condition known as pre-diabetes.

For those women who have had gestational diabetes before in early pregnancy, they should consult their doctor before getting pregnant again. It is important to conduct a blood glucose test during the crucial first few weeks of pregnancy to ensure the blood glucose level is within the normal condition.

Most mothers know that breastfeeding is good for their baby in developing a better immune system. But, they do not know that by breastfeeding their baby, this will also reduce the chances of their baby getting diabetes when they grow up.

Lastly, the pregnant mother should always keep away from the food with high glycemic index to reduce the risk of getting gestational diabetes. Eating right food and regular exercises will help to maintain a healthy weight. This is good in gestational diabetes prevention.
