Diabetic eye complication
Eye complication of diabetes is known as diabetic retinopathy. Eye complications of diabetes normally do not happen instantly. It takes some time to develop. Almost 40% of diabetics have some form of this eye retinopathy problem. Retinopathy is some kind of non inflammatory damages to the retina which mainly due to the blood supply.
The blood vessels that make up the retina are very tiny. When the glycemia in the blood vessel is excessive, the blood flow through those blood vessels around the retina becomes difficult.
As the blood flow now is concentrated and high viscosity. It causes the retina blood vessel to swell and become more fragile. Finally, the damaged blood vessels in the retina will begin to leak extra fluid and blood into the eye. Then, the diabetic starts to have vision problems. For example, tiny spots of blood that leak into the retina will cause some loss of vision. This condition is known as retinal hemorrhages. Other than that, the leakage of fluid from retina¡¯s blood vessel will caused swelling or thickening of the macula. Macula is responsible for our clear central vision. When macula is swollen, it does not function well and thus, the vision is also affected.
Other than these few complications, there are many more serious eye complications may happen if the condition did not be well taken care of. The worst complication of eyes may lead to blindness. For this reason, a person with diabetes should always have eye examination with experienced ophthalmologist at least once a year. If the eye complications of diabetes are detected at the early stage, it is possible to cure. There are surgeries available that can prevent further damage to the eyes of diabetics.
However, the best way to prevent eye complications is still to control the blood glucose level in the body. Maintaining your weight, regular exercises, having healthy diet and life style are the best medicine to prevent getting eye complications of diabetes.
